Paweł Klecki and the Music of Łódź
The exhibition dedicated to Paweł Klecki at the Museum of the City of Łódź is the first exposition commemorating this outstanding artist on the 50th anniversary of his death. The arrangement of the exhibition space has been designed to reflect the various stages of the life and work of this world-renowned native of Łódź.
The exposition extends across several interconnected rooms, where bright and dark spaces harmoniously intertwine, creating distinct thematic zones. Original documents, scores, and memorabilia related to Klecki are presented in display cases placed on minimalist frames. Despite settling in Switzerland before World War II, Klecki never severed his ties with Poland.
One of the spaces is dedicated to the artist's musical legacy, showcasing a collection of records and recordings that document his activity as a conductor. Another part of the exhibition presents a list of cities, illustrating the international scope of his career – from both Americas through the Middle East to Japan and Australia.
The exposition is complemented by multimedia elements that allow visitors to better understand the soundscape of Łódź during its period of extraordinary industrial growth in the first quarter of the 20th century – sounds that Klecki, as a violinist, co-created, and later, as a composer and conductor, preserved and carried "from the heart of Łódź to the heart of the world."
The entire arrangement, set within rooms with classic architectural details, creates a fitting backdrop for the story of this "unknown hero of Łódź, the Great Absent One," whose musical life, though full of dramas and unexpected twists, constitutes an essential part of the city's cultural heritage.
